Teaching Brevity: Nicole Walker#8217;s #8220;Fish#8221; By Heidi Czerwiec. Nicole Walker is a writer whose first book of poetry This Noisy Egg was followed by a book of human, lyric nonfiction, Quench Your Thirst With Salt , and a co-edited collection Bending Genre: Essays on Nonfiction . It is because of this thoughtful genre-bending she embraces that I enjoy teaching her work in multi-genre introductory creative writing workshops, in essay-writing courses, and, most recently, in eye prothesis, a hybrid forms workshop. In particular, I have great success with her short piece “Fish,” the human anatomy essay, opening essay in Quench , and a Brevity essay as well, which never fails to police abusing provoke heated discussions and anatomy and physiology questions, compelling imitations. Introduction! “Fish” is a nonfiction piece that complicates students’ ideas of what an essay is and how it should behave. A triptych, each part is only ?1 page long. The first part resembles nature or environmental writing and anatomy and physiology essay questions, describes, in essays learning styles, a zoomed-in empathetic third-person point of view, a salmon fighting to anatomy essay climb a man-made fish ladder: “The fish jumped a ladder built of electricity and concrete. Essay On A! Swimming up the Columbia teachers her a lesson about progress.” The second section, written in first person (but with an awareness that shifts between a child’s and an adult’s perspective), is a vivid memory of deep-sea fishing with her father and his friends, and struggling to essay questions reel in a reflective on a course, a huge barracuda: “I am eleven years old and holding onto a fishing pole, trolling for big fish in the deep water off Florida’s coast. I must have been beautiful then.” The third part, written in second person, reads like food writing – in this case, how to prepare fish: “Cooking filets of anatomy and physiology, fish is not complicated…. It’s the sauce that’s difficult.” “Fish” represents three different kinds of way to list things in an, nonfiction writing – nature documentary, memoir, and food writing – with which students are already familiar. And Physiology Essay! But how do they work (or not work) together as a triptych of styles seemingly linked only by topic?

Each section presents only a brief, image-based moment addressing some aspect of fish – only the global for environmental, recipe-like third section offers us much closure, and none gives that satisfying moral or meaning that students long for. Their reaction to “Fish” is complicated further by unexpected lyric elements: “This isn’t an essay; it’s a poem,” they complain. While each section has its distinct voice, images and words echo across the essay: the straining of the salmon upstream becomes the straining of the young girl and barracuda against each other, and returns as directions for making a sauce: “Strain through a chinois. Strain through cheese cloth. Strain one more time for human and physiology essay questions good measure.” Words like “circling,” “hold,” and “flesh” recur, accruing meaning. And Walker breaks her prose into short paragraphs sometimes only introduction to dissertation, a line long, which visually resembles poetry and affects the pacing of essay questions, how we read her essay. Eye Prothesis! How can all of these elements co-exist in the same piece of anatomy and physiology essay, writing? As all of you are well aware, the verb “essay” or “assay” means to attempt. Walker’s “Fish” makes explicit the many approaches we may take to our topics. What is interesting is the correct way to essay, way she tries to do several at once – create three distinct styles and voices and points of view, and yet tie them together not only through topic, but more subtly through recurrent words and images. As a result, “Fish” offers much for discussion about the choices she’s made and anatomy and physiology essay, the effects they have on readers, both in the individual sections and eye prothesis, across the whole piece.

After discussing “Fish,” I like to lead students through a guided free-write imitation: I have them start by writing about a vivid memory involving a single-ingredient food item – an anatomy and physiology essay questions, animal, a fruit or vegetable, a spice, etc. Then, I have them try to write a brief scene from the eye prothesis, sensory perspective of that food item. Finally, they write directions for human anatomy essay their favorite recipe for that item. For their assignment, they can develop these sections, but I encourage them to explore other ways of considering that food item (its history, its cultural associations, etc.), so long as they end up with at least a three-part essay. Learning! As they refine their piece, they should also experiment with creating distinct voices, styles, and points of view for each section, as well as finding ways to tie the sections together via language, imagery, or other elements. This piece often is human questions one of the strongest my students produce, and correct way to things in an essay, encourages them to play with a number of writing techniques in a short piece. She is the author of Sweet/Crude: A Bakken Boom Cycle , the forthcoming collection Conjoining , and the editor of anatomy and physiology essay, North Dakota Is Everywhere: An Anthology of Contemporary North Dakota Poets . She lives in Minneapolis, where she works with various literary organizations, including Motionpoems, ROAR: Literature and introduction to dissertation, Revolution from human anatomy and physiology questions, Feminist People , and the Minnesota Prison Writing Workshop.

By Irene Hoge Smith. The Jewish High Holy Days mark a season of abusing, endings and beginnings, atonement and forgiveness. Alongside my Jewish husband and and physiology, with our interfaith community, I am able to partake in this precious opportunity for correct list contemplation. One of my endings (and perhaps a new beginning) is that, after more than five years, I seem finally to have finished writing about my mother. This month I sent Snaggletooth’s Daughter: A Memoir out to find its way in the world. (I’d thought it finished this time last year, but in the way of these things it needed one more rewrite to be the best I could make it.) The book is human anatomy questions about my lost-and-found mother. She was a poet, my father an engineer, and their marriage was chaotic and destructive. When they finally split up, my father got custody of me and my three sisters (aged six to sixteen) and my mother moved to California, where she picked up the way to list things in an essay, life of poetry she’d set aside for human anatomy essay questions the decade and a half she was with us.

She became Charles Bukowski’s Snaggletooth, mother of way to list things in an essay, his only human anatomy, child, and francEyE, a respected poet in essays different learning, her own right. From fourteen to anatomy essay questions thirty, I did my best to pretend I’d never had a mother. When that coping strategy inevitably outlived its usefulness, I took up the task of trying to form some kind of relationship with the woman who had been, but no longer was, my mother. She was a writer, and I respected that, but was still shocked when I discovered she’d left out of her own memoir anything about me and my sisters or her marriage to our father. When I received an invitation to her book launch party, I wrote what became my first published essay, instead of an RSVP. Global Center For Environmental Psychosynthesis! Then I decided to make another visit, to ask her directly to talk about the years she’d been our mother, and human essay questions, begin to things understand more completely what her life had been. By the time she died, I was able to speak at her funeral, filling in the missing parts of her life story in words that were, I hoped, not untrue and not unkind.

Yet when a fellow writer asks me after a group reading—well-meaning, insistent, and in obvious distress—if I have forgiven my mother, I feel put on the spot. I want to say, “Forgive her? Interesting question. You know, she never asked!” Or, since tout comprendre, c’est tout pardoner , I might point out that I’ve spent most of a decade (or my whole life) on the work of understanding my mother. My defensiveness makes me wonder if there’s something I’ve neglected. Human Anatomy And Physiology Questions! Have I not forgiven her? I think my friend, pained by the sad litany of loss, hoped that “forgiveness” would be the thing that could wrap the story up with a happy bow, so that I could stop writing about the things that happened and their long-lasting effects. Maybe the problem is that I’d so much love to eye prothesis be able to do something like that—to say the magic word “forgive,” and thus bring into being a sweet, uncomplicated, mother-daughter love, and make everything all okay. I wish I could do that, but that’s not what forgiveness is. In order to forgive, we must give up the desire for revenge, any claim to get something back in compensation for having been hurt, and in that regard I feel on and physiology essay, solid ground. I don’t recall ever trying to make my mother suffer, or even wishing that she would.

I wanted to tell my own story, but I didn’t do it to hurt her or anyone else. Forgiveness also requires that we acknowledge the humanity of the person who has caused hurt. I might easily have written my mother as a caricature—a foolish, self-involved woman, more attached to eye prothesis her writing and human and physiology questions, political beliefs than to her children, whose abandonment of those children defined her. I knew from the eye prothesis, perspective of writing, emotional health, and essay questions, maybe even the good of my soul, whatever that might be, how important it was not to fall into that trap. Finally, to forgive someone we have to be able to abusing their essay wish them well despite our own pain. My mother’s gone now, but I’m glad she got to publish her poems, (even if there are still a few I don’t get) and that she felt loved by the one daughter she was able to mother.

I’m sad that I was not a beneficiary of that late-developed capacity, but if it were up to me I’d want that relationship to have existed rather than not. I’m glad she died free of human anatomy and physiology questions, pain and different learning styles, fear, and that she was not wracked by human and physiology, guilt. I hope that, if she is somewhere now, she is at peace. For our own sake, and perhaps for the sake of the world, we are enjoined to give up thoughts of revenge, relinquish enduring resentment, grant to the person who has hurt us their own essential humanity, and practice compassion to them and to list ourselves. We are not required to write a book about them. I did that for myself. Irene Hoge Smith lives, writes and practices psychotherapy near Washington D.C. Her essays have appeared in New Directions Journal , Amsterdam Quarterly, Prick of the Spindle, and Vine Leaves Literary Review , and human anatomy and physiology questions, she was a 2016 AWP Writer-to Writer Mentee. Writing! (One of the founding mothers of IFFP, she is observing Yom Kippur today with her interfaith community.) Teaching Brevity: Reading Short, Writing Short. By Kelly Kathleen Ferguson.

I confess that I first turned to flash nonfiction because I needed a way to organize twenty undergraduate students, and I needed it in human and physiology questions, a week. Based on the The Rose Metal Press Field Guide to a reflective essay Writing Flash Nonfiction , and essay, supplemental readings from Brevity , I devised this repeating course schedule: 1) Mondays and Wednesdays would consist of introduction, a combination of reading discussion, prompts, and craft lecture, while 2) Fridays would be for small group workshops of essay questions, four, where I rotated through the groups. A Reflective On A! Here was my thinking: Short reading assignments would mean students actually read. Short essays for workshop eliminated the essay questions, need for distributing work ahead of time. That everyone was up for workshop every week eliminated the need for a rotating schedule. Introduction! Grading would be based on participation, which took care of attendance issues. So many logistical problems, solved!

This course structure helped me successfully navigate the usual undergraduate workshop obstacles, such as grandmother genocide, wayward printers, dastardly roommates, and even the anatomy and physiology essay questions, dreaded “Thirsty Thursday.” It went so well I have taught my intermediate nonfiction courses the same way ever since. And while practical considerations are not to be minimized, given time to reflect, I’ve uncovered legitimate pedagogical benefits: Students establish the writing a reflective essay, habit of reader and writer. Rapid turnaround means lower stakes. Students are freer to risk, and I am freer to human risk different prompts. Most undergraduate essays demonstrate problems within 800 words that will not be helped by more words. Different Styles! Flash forces students to human and physiology questions eliminate throat-clearing passages, pushes them to reach the their, point. (I generally notice a turn about the third or fourth essay in.) Over the human anatomy and physiology questions, semester, students get to experience a depth and breadth of creative nonfiction. Introduction! By the end students have a stack of human and physiology questions, essays, which feels good. Because I’m a Libra, I have also considered the negatives of this class structure: Lack of opportunity to write longer essays that include more preparation and/or in-depth reporting. A bias towards lyric writing over narrative (maybe).

Inability to formulate workshop comments ahead of time. Eye Prothesis! To balance these negatives, I use the last two weeks of class for human and physiology essay questions conferencing, geared towards revision strategies for the final portfolio. Students might realize that their flash essay is really a longer essay, or maybe they find a theme—pieces they could string together to eye prothesis create a narrative sequence. Maybe their flash piece needs to be cut even further. Maybe they’ve really written a poem or a short story. This is their chance to look back, reflect, to consider what they’ve created and where they would like to go from here.

A few publishable gems are a great find. A ream of human anatomy and physiology questions, hot mess—also fine. For Environmental Psychosynthesis! Either way, what I’m really hoping, is that after the human anatomy, course is completed, students have made a regular writing practice part of who they are, and if they are not writing, they have this weird feeling that something is wrong. No, it is difficult to draw a simple, general conclusion on this issue, as the evidence suggests that different groups of Martians have interpreted and viewed the human and physiology questions environment very differently over time, and no clear trend is visible even now. When you begin planning your essay, you should always be able to state your thesis in a fairly straightforward way, based on your initial reading and research for the topic. This sentence or two states your case. Broadly, your essay is the exposition and defence of that case: it shows the reader how, and why, you have arrived at those conclusions. To write a good essay, you must first decide what your central argument is going to be, and then plan your essay to develop that argument. Learning? Of course, as you write your first draft, you may find that the argument changes and develops in a direction you did not anticipate.

Few writers are completely sure of their final conclusions before they begin drafting: the task of writing down and defending the argument often reveals unanticipated problems, or challenges and changes your first thoughts, or leads you toward one interpretation more than another. Often, too, you might need to go back to your sources, read through some of human anatomy and physiology, your notes, or do some further reading to clarify and expand an different learning emerging point. However, the basic thrust and content of your argument or thesis should be clear enough to allow you to plan the stages of human and physiology, your argument before you begin drafting. Essay? Perhaps the single best way of ensuring a successful essay is and physiology essay questions, having a good plan . The plan should lay out your argument, for correct way to list in an essay, instance in point form, and you can also use it to essay, indicate where you will use certain items of evidence and supporting arguments. introduction: state the case for no: Martians have persistently respected their version of the natural environment, because natural environments are always viewed in a romanticised and idealised form explain the thrust of the argument : dispute recent discovery, my essay focuses on previous century to introduction, show that respect for and physiology essay, environment is always based on historically variable assumptions and preconceptions about beauty, usefulness and worth of nature explain idealisation/romanticisation of the natural environment (summarise Smith’s theory of idealisation, discuss paintings, use examples from Connor and Jones) list and give examples of different idealisations of natural environment in the nineteenth century and show different assumptions about beauty and usefulness behind each one (use examples from Green and Brown) show how these different ideals were sometimes contradictory or came into conflict (use example of forestry in Mars Forest) case study: the Martian garden legend (discuss the garden stories); argue that an environment under exploitation also increasingly romanticised (review the different interpretations of essays learning styles, Green and Red, show why I think Green fits better with the evidence) summarise above points about previous century; what is respected in the recent past: argue that this is another idealisation (evidence: Martian tourist brochures); conclusion: restate the case , and argue that understanding respect for natural environment always means analysing the idealisation of natural environments. In the short essays common in first year, your plan is and physiology, likely to be less complex, and may only have four or five main points. As you progress into second and third year, you are expected to develop more sophisticated arguments, which makes good planning even more important. 6a. Introducing and developing the argument. In your introduction , you should state your case and, as in the example above, set out the basic structure of your argument . You might also briefly summarise two or three of your main points. If you have decided to their power, adopt a particular focus (for instance, using case studies from a particular time or place, or narrowing the topic to concentrate on a particular theme), you should explain this in the introduction as well.

Developing the argument : The example above shows how an argument is then developed towards its conclusion. Basically, each stage of your argument should be developed and defended in turn, by human anatomy essay, showing your interpretation of the on a appropriate evidence, by critically reviewing the human anatomy and physiology essay work of other historians, and by introduction, using example, case study and explanation. A good way of thinking about this is to imagine that you are building your argument in blocks . Each paragraph is a block which builds your argument towards a conclusion. Each block is introduced and described, and then its place in the whole structure is shown. Block 1: stage of the argument. On Mars in the 1850s, the beauty of nature was usually associated with wild, untouched landscapes. Painters rarely drew human figures. If there were humans, nature towered over anatomy, them, as in Rembrandt’s Martian Mountains. In her book Environmental Perception on Mars, Joan Brown argues that painters in the 1850s focused on how nature was being conquered.

However, Ash clearly shows that mid-nineteenth-century Martians usually depicted an essays different learning styles idealised nature which was to be protected from the threats posed by civilisation. Block 2: next stage of the argument. The most crucial changes occurred after the Martian titanium rushes of the essay 1870s showed the potentially lucrative returns of mineral exploration and exploitation. Certainly, by the 1880s, most representations of the natural environment showed nature being tamed and civilised. Even mining sites appeared in nature paintings, and psychosynthesis the work of anatomy questions, Joseph Smith is a good example of introduction, how even the most intensive forms of exploitation were represented as beneficial intrusion for the landscape. Block 3: brief summary, and introducing the next stage of the argument. By the 1880s, therefore, the anatomy and physiology essay idealised untouched nature of the 1850s had been invaded by humans, and an ideal natural landscape was now represented as one which was productive and bountiful. Humans did not threaten nature; they unleashed its potential. It was important for Martians, Smith argued in 1883, to feel relaxed and comfortable about the past and global center for environmental psychosynthesis future of the Martian environment. Yet representations of an ideal environment as one conquered and populated by humans never completely replaced the human and physiology questions older tradition of mourning the degradation of another form of ideal environment, the Martian garden.

This alternative version became popular again in the 1890s. The body of your essay, therefore, uses evidence, examples and explanation to develop your case point by point. Each paragraph has a point to make, and occasional summary sentences guide the reader through the argument. 6b. Using different kinds of evidence. In developing your case, you will need to make decisions about the kinds of essays different, sources you will refer to, and the best ways to use them. Sources can generally be defined into two broad types: primary or documentary sources (usually written at the time by an eyewitness, direct participant or close observer) secondary or scholarly sources (usually interpretations and human explanations written after the eye prothesis fact by someone analysing the primary or documentary sources) For example, a book containing the collected speeches of human anatomy questions, Charles de Gaulle is a primary source; an analysis of them by a political scientist or historian is a secondary source. Police Power Essay? An article in the Age of 30 June 1900 about the bubonic plague epidemic which affected Sydney during that year is essay, a primary source; an article in police abusing power, the Age on and physiology 30 June 1990 discussing the impact of the epidemic on public health policy in Australia is a secondary source.

Broadly, the primary or documentary sources are the raw material used by historians , the subject of your argument, while the secondary or scholarly sources provide examples of essays different, how others have analysed and interpreted the problem or issue at hand. The distinction is human essay questions, not hard and way to list essay fast, and there will always be exceptions. For instance, if you are writing an essay about historians’ representations of race in Britain, the secondary sources of the historians are in fact your primary documentary source. In most essays, you will be expected to critically analyse the human anatomy essay questions interpretations of other historians in this way. In any event, these different types of to dissertation, sources should both be read critically: analysed for their point of view, for the assumptions, ideas and understandings which inform them, and for the strategies writers use to advance their arguments. Don’t take anything on trust: be a critical reader of all kinds of sources and texts , and use your critical analysis of both primary and secondary sources in human anatomy and physiology, your essay. You also need to make decisions about introduction, how to use evidence: in the form of quotation, or in the form of summarising. It is best to use quotation strategically and sparingly : quote phrases or passages which best illustrate the point you are trying to make, or which really help you give your reader the human anatomy essay questions flavour of the evidence you are using. If you use a quotation, make sure it fits with the stage of the writing a reflective essay course argument you are advancing.

Refer to the language, analyse the assumptions or strategies it reveals. Human And Physiology Questions? In other words, use quotation when the actual words are the single best way of providing the essays different evidence and developing your case. Human Anatomy And Physiology Questions? If the quotation is less than about to dissertation, thirty words, combine it with your text, as in this example where I am quoting the following phrase which is and physiology, not very long. “You must always use quotation marks to indicate the separation between your words and global center psychosynthesis the words of someone else.” If it is longer than this, you should separate it from the text, and indent it: This is an example of a much longer quote. It contains a few sentences, and needs to be distinguished from the body of the essay. When you are indenting a quote like this, note that you do not have to use quotation marks; as it is already separated, there is no need to indicate that by the use of such symbols. In general, use very little quotation from secondary or scholarly sources.

It is better to say what you mean in your own words, quoting another historian or interpreter only where the phrase is particularly wonderful or where you need to show precisely how that writer made their point in order to criticise, defend or develop it. In all other cases, it is best to summarise. Write reflective summaries of what others have written, relating those interpretations to your argument. You might find that the example paragraphs on the previous page gives you a more concrete idea of anatomy essay, how a writer can use a mix of summary and direct quotation from different kinds of essays learning, sources to develop their argument. In your conclusion, you should restate your case strongly and clearly by summarising your main points. Anatomy And Physiology Questions? It is also possible to raise issues and problems in your conclusion, especially broader questions which are beyond the center scope of your essay. You might reflect on what your interpretation implies for contemporary debates or discussions, write briefly about the questions broader implications of your position, or consider what your interpretations tells us about the role and nature of history itself.

Use your conclusion to argue for the significance of your argument and your interpretation. Be careful, though: a poorly developed argument followed by sweeping speculations on the nature of the universe or the human condition is unlikely to be either effective or convincing. Again, as you develop your skills in eye prothesis, formulating, developing and defending arguments, you will also develop your ability to essay questions, write more reflectively and to use essays to open up these kinds of complex questions. 7. Writing clearly and effectively. The best single rule is to always use clear expression: write simply and with clarity and avoid complex sentence constructions . Use definite, specific and way to concrete language. Human Anatomy And Physiology Essay Questions? Don’t use unnecessary words, and to dissertation make sure you understand the words you are using. Writing problems often occur when people try to use very complex language and syntax. A better idea is to establish a simple and clear style first, and human anatomy then gradually develop more complex sentence forms and means of expression. As you develop your writing skills, vary your sentence structures and to dissertation lengths to add variety. And Physiology Essay Questions? Short sentences often add emphasis to a particularly important point. Spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors detract from an argument, whatever its quality: careful editing of your draft is very important.

It is also important to correct way to list, use accurate language, which is one good reason for using non-discriminatory language. For instance, the statement that men adapted themselves to these new conditions should lead any critical reader to ask what women were doing at that time. It is a reasonable and accepted convention that all forms of public communication, including journalism, business language and academic writing, should use non-discriminatory language. There are at least five effective ways of improving your writing. Always read your own work.

what is my main idea, my contention, my argument? am I getting it across to the reader? Take responsibility for critically assessing your own writing . Look at the comments made on your previous essays, and work out whether this one repeats the strengths and overcomes the weaknesses of your previous work. If you need to, speak to the person who assessed your work, and ask them for more guidance. Reading other writers. As you read, evaluate the styles of different writers.

What makes them more or less effective? What is most important to you as a reader, and what makes good writers better to read? Practice. Like any other set of skills, writing improves with practice and human anatomy essay with constructive assessment, by yourself and by others. Read your own work out loud . You do not need to comprehend the rules of grammar or the intricacies of syntax to know when something sounds clumsy, or when a sentence needs punctuation, or when a long paragraph has completely lost its drift.

Reading your draft out loud is also a good way to add variety and to dissertation oomph to your language. If its boring you to human and physiology essay, tears, or if you have no idea what it means, it might be time for redrafting. Let other people read what you write . It is particularly good to give your essay to someone who is not an introduction to dissertation expert in and physiology questions, the area you are writing about. If it doesn’t make sense to them, your argument might need clarification. If they struggle to read it, you might need to global, edit more carefully. Essay Questions? University teachers will not usually be able to read drafts of police power, students work, but there are plenty of other people who can give you feedback. Swap essays with fellow students. Human Anatomy Essay Questions? Get the people you live with to list things essay, read them.

Distribute them on buses. 8. Referencing Instructions for Essays. Decisions about when to essay, cite sources can be difficult. Effective referencing is correct things, another writing skill your university work aims to anatomy questions, develop. The reader should, in theory, be able to retrace your steps in gathering evidence for police abusing their power, your argument. In other words, you provide citations as a kind of road map that shows readers how you came to these conclusions, shows readers where you derived your information and, if relevant, shows readers where you derived the ideas or interpretations that you are paraphrasing, adopting or challenging. Therefore, you need to provide citations in the following instances: where you directly quote someone else’s words; where you are directly summarising someone else’s argument and ideas; where you are summarising arguments and ideas derived from a number of human anatomy and physiology essay questions, sources; to point your readers to eye prothesis, the source of information; to translate words or phrase in anatomy and physiology, a foreign language that a reader cannot reasonably be presumed to understand. In general, you need to provide sources for statements that are problematic or debatable in the context of your argument, or that a reasonably well-informed person would not be expected to know. Introduction To Dissertation? Again, the and physiology questions ability to successfully make these judgements is a skill you will develop with practice and experience. If you offer a translation of a word or phrase in a foreign language, the basis of your decision should be whether a reader could reasonably be presumed to abusing, know the meaning of the phrase or word already. There is no need to translate coup d’etat or Sultan or Blitzkrieg, for instance.

The use of citation to human questions, refer readers to the work of a reflective essay course, other writers is occasionally useful, but for human essay, the most part, your citations refer only to introduction to dissertation, books, articles and human and physiology other material you have used directly. Center? Only cite information that you have actually looked at yourself, or: always SIGHT what you CITE . It is fine to human anatomy and physiology essay questions, use a second-hand reference (like a quotation or a summary in correct way to in an essay, a book from human essay questions, a source to which you do not have access), but you should indicate that in your citation. Center For Environmental Psychosynthesis? An example of how to human anatomy essay, do this is provided in the next section. Introduction? You can also use citations to clarify specific points, or add a small amount of human and physiology questions, additional information or supporting evidence. You should not use footnotes or endnotes as a sort of correct list essay, second argument, nor to provide paragraph after paragraph of new information. If it is not important enough to put into the body of the essay, then leave it out. 8b. Numbering and questions placement of footnote and endnote numbers. When providing footnotes or endnotes, number notes consecutively throughout the text. Put these numbers at police abusing power the end of human anatomy and physiology essay questions, sentences, if at essays styles all possible, and distinguish them from the text either by superscripting (raising above the line) or placing them in anatomy and physiology questions, brackets.

If you use material from two different sources in the same sentence, it is often possible to combine the two citations in one footnote, using a semi-colon to separate them. Global Center For Environmental? Usually, you will refer to information or material at particular places in a larger work so you will need to show the anatomy page (p.) or pages (pp.) on abusing power essay which the material is located. This text produces the following footnotes: On Mars in the 1850s, the ‘beauty’ of nature was usually associated with wild, untouched landscapes. Painters rarely drew human figures. If there were humans, nature towered over them, as in Rembrandt’s ‘Martian Mountains’. 1 In her book Environmental Perception on Mars , Joan Brown argues that “painters in the 1850s focused on and physiology essay how nature was being conquered”. 2 However, Ash clearly shows that mid-nineteenth-century Martians respected an idealised nature which was to be kept separate from essays styles, civilisation.

8c. Citing different kinds of sources. The following rules should help you through most situations. The absolute rule is to be consistent. Inconsistency drives readers crazy, and is not a good tactic when you are attempting to essays different styles, convince those readers of the accuracy of and physiology essay, your interpretations and arguments. There are also specific rules for the citation of classical texts like the Bible, the Koran and list in an so on. If you are studying subjects in which these texts are used, your tutor will provide you with the information you need to cite correctly.

Please note: Some areas of history, especially those published by European and English publishing houses (and now more often Australian publishers), follow the conventions set out in human anatomy and physiology essay questions, the MHRA (Modern Humanities Research Association’s) Style Guide (available electronically at http://www.mhra.org.uk/Publications/Books/StyleGuide/download.shtml, see section 10.2.2). The guide differs to the above in that it adds the publisher to the publication details, and is formatted differently. For example: Peter Burke, The European Renaissance: Centres and Peripheries (Oxford: Blackwell, 1998), pp. 54-56. It is now common practice to use full stops only where the abbreviation of the word does not contain the last letter of the eye prothesis word. So, editor becomes ed., but editors becomes eds. Doctor is Dr, but Professor is Prof.. Also, where an abbreviated title is used very commonly, you do not need to put in full stops: for instance, ALP, ACTU or UNESCO . Primary or documentary material cited by another author. If you need to refer to a quote or to anatomy and physiology questions, a piece of evidence which you accessed in a secondary or scholarly source rather than the original source, use these examples as a guide: R. G. Menzies, speech in the House of Representatives, 23 March 1943, cited in Judith Brett, Robert Menzies Forgotten People, Melbourne 1992, p. 47.

Letter from Lewis Mumford to Frederic Osborn, 2 April 1937, cited in Alison Ravetz, Remaking the Urban Environment, London 1980, pp. Eye Prothesis? 148-9. The general rule is that if the essay original source is available, you should go to and use that original source, rather than borrowing your evidence from another writer. John of Salisbury, Policraticus , trans. J. Dickinson, in J.B. Ross and M.M. McLaughlin (eds), The Portable Medieval Reader , Harmondsworth, 1977, pp. 251-2.

(Note: ‘trans.’ is the abbreviation for ‘translated by’.) If your area of history follows the MHRA Style Guide , this item in your bibliography would follow the same convention outlined earlier, namely: John of Salisbury, Policraticus , trans. J. Introduction? Dickinson, in The Portable Medieval Reader , ed. by J.B. Ross and human and physiology questions M.M. McLaughlin (Harmondsworth: Penguin, 1977), pp. 251- 2. If the document was not published but has a title (for instance, an unpublished paper or a speech or an article), use single inverted commas around the name of the document. If it was not published and introduction to dissertation has no title (a letter, for instance), there is anatomy essay, no need for any marking. For instance:

Friederich Engels, ‘The evils of capitalism’, in K. Kharkov (ed.), The Collected Speeches of Engels , Moscow, 1954, pp. Introduction To Dissertation? 23-8. Yves of Narbonne, letter to Gerald of Mallemort, c. 1241, in Walter L. Wakefield and Austin P. Evans (eds), Heresies of the High Middle Ages , New York, 1991, pp. 185-7. If you are going to be using documents in archives, or other unpublished material, consult your tutor for assistance with citation rules. If you are referring to normal newspaper writing (news of anatomy questions, events, editorials, and so on), you need only provide the correct list in an essay name of the newspaper and anatomy the date: The Age , 25 April 1996. If you wish to refer to a specific article, usually by an invited contributor, or to a significant special feature (say, a four-page special report or a report in their essay, a weekly magazine), use the same format as for articles in journals or magazines. Author (first name, last name), title (use either italics or underline), place and anatomy and physiology date of publication, page (p.) or pages (pp.) of the information to which you are referring. So: Tim Bonyhady, The Colonial Earth , Melbourne, 2000, p. 13. These publication details are always on one of the first pages of the book (and usually on the page after the main title page): these details list the publisher and the place of publication, and give other information, most of eye prothesis, which you don’t need to and physiology questions, provide (though see the eye prothesis note below).

It is important to anatomy and physiology essay, check if this is the first edition of the center psychosynthesis book, as subsequent editions may contain major revisions, which your reader will need to know in order to follow your research trail. If the book is a second or subsequent edition, put that information behind the title. Some further examples: Joanna Bourke, Dismembering the Male: Men’s Bodies , Britain and the Great War, London, 1996, pp. 98-104. John Kasson, Houdini, Tarzan, and the perfect man: the white male body and the challenge of modernity in America , New York, 2001, p. 231. Using Resources From the Internet and different learning WWW. While there are some very useful sites for historians, including homepages describing research, or containing documents, photographs and interpretive materials, or providing primary documents like speeches, transcripts or debates, you need to be as critical and human and physiology careful in your use of WWW resources as in your use of any other kind of introduction to dissertation, evidence . A good deal of the material on the web is not ‘screened’ in human anatomy questions, any way: it is not edited, reviewed by others, or subject to any control. List Things? This is its greatest strength and its greatest weakness as a medium, and human and physiology questions makes the task of critically assessing and using sources even more important. For the citation, you need to give your reader enough information so that they can easily locate your source: in this case, the full web site information. To Dissertation? You also need to tell your reader when you accessed the page: because web pages are updated, the information may have changed location or been removed. In fact, it is a good idea to print out a copy of the human and physiology questions page(s) you are using: you can use them more easily, and you have a copy of the information should it subsequently disappear from the web. Citing something for the second time: use of abbreviations and short titles. Once you have given full information in the first footnote, you should use abbreviations and eye prothesis short titles to questions, refer to a reflective on a, the same source again. Essay? What will usually suffice is the authors last name and a short title (i.e. the first few significant words of the title, as below).

Ibidem (always abbreviate as Ibid.) indicates in the place just described, but it must follow directly from the learning styles previous citation. 1 Joanna Bourke, Dismembering the Male: Men’s Bodies, Britain and the Great War , London, 1996, pp. 98-104. 3 Roger Cooter, ‘War and Modern Medicine’, in W. In endnote 6, the information is contained on a reflective on a the same page as endnote 5, and therefore you do not need to repeat the human and physiology page number. Again, keep in a reflective course, mind the principle of giving the reader the amount of information they would need to find the anatomy material for themselves. There may be particular conventions which you should observe for particular units: you will be provided with these where necessary. In general, historians do not use the Harvard referencing system. Archaeology students, whose discipline does employ this system when referencing, should follow the abusing their power norms of history referencing when writing history essays. Similarly, history students should use the human Harvard referencing system when writing archaeology essays. Students need to be aware that in archaeology/ancient history a variety of styles is used: Harvard, Oxford and MHRA. Students in the Centre for abusing their, Archaeology and anatomy and physiology essay questions Ancient History must be able to use all of them correctly; they also use unpublished materials of the their power types outlined for human, history and reference them in abusing essay, footnotes. Human And Physiology Essay Questions? In the end, it is a matter of their essay, communicating your understanding of your evidence in the style appropriate for your discipline and task.

Unit coordinators will advise you if you are unsure. 9. Forming a bibliography and an annotated bibliography. Your essay should include a bibliography of human essay questions, all sources. If you have used a wide variety of a reflective, different types of sources, it is helpful to put them into human essay questions, different sections: for instance, the documents or texts (primary sources) you have used might be separated from the historical scholarship (secondary sources). In general, follow the eye prothesis same conventions described above with the exception that authors’ surnames precede their forenames/initials to allow for easier alphabetisation (as in human and physiology questions, the example below). List your sources alphabetically within each section. However, you do not need to include the page numbers for specific information or citations in your bibliography.

Films, television and radio shows and documents from web sites should be included: if there is no author, put them at the front of the list and order them alphabetically by global center, title. Newspapers should be listed, but you do not need to provide the dates. All sources which you have used in anatomy, order to assist your interpretation of your evidence (the historical scholarship, or secondary sources), should be annotated, when an abusing their power essay annotated bibliography is required in the unit. Annotation tells the reader what role a particular source played in developing your argument. A statement of two or three sentences is usually ample.

For instance: Joanna Bourke, Dismembering the Male: Men’s Bodies, Britain and human and physiology essay the Great War, London, 1996. Bourke’s argument about the writing a reflective essay changing meaning of ‘disability’ provided a very important perspective on the links between wartime and postwar debates over masculine vulnerability. Her interpretation of what ‘shell-shock’ taught doctors about manhood was particularly valuable for my argument, as was her discussion of dress reform movements during the 1920s. One of the most important skills in effective communication is formatting and presenting your work in ways which help rather than hinder your reader. The impression of clarity, fluency and organisation created by good formatting is very important; conversely, a good essay written without regard for the eye as well as the mind is an ineffective piece of communication. Some general guidelines: observe the human anatomy and physiology essay word length, or at writing a reflective least a margin of error of about 10 per anatomy essay cent: one of the skills of writing is to write to a target, and to tailor your argument to suit the essays different styles demands of that target. A short 1500 word essay on wartime politics in Nazi Germany or criminality in nineteenth-century Australia is meant to be a short essay, not a major thesis. Adapt your case, and the ground you will cover, so that you can write something effective and convincing within the word length; include a word count with your essay. type, print or handwrite the essay on one side of the paper only, using standard A4 paper, and number each page.

For essays of 1500 words or more, it is reasonable for your tutor to expect a typed or printed copy, though handwriting is human, fine for different styles, shorter exercises; double or one-and-a-half spacing is required, because it leaves more room for comments and corrections; leave a 4cm margin on the left hand side, and a 1.5cm margin on the right, again for comments and ease of reading. Ensure that you use at least a 12-point font. attach a cover sheet (standard cover sheets are available in the pigeonholes under the anatomy and physiology counter of the School of Historical Studies’ General Office, W604). You must tick all the boxes on their essay the reverse side of the cover sheet before signing off under the plagiarism and collusion statement on the front of the sheet. ensure that your essay stays together: staples, paper clips, a plastic folder, whatever (we do not grade essays by weight, so go easy on the staples).

In Advani’s Silence, the Sum of All Fears. L.K. Human Anatomy. Advani. Credit: Reuters. Lal Krishna Advani’s isolation mirrors the retreat of essays learning styles, Indian politics. But then that is what the autumn of the patriarch is like in the Hindu varnashrama dharma – he spends a lifetime building a house only to find that when the edifice is ready, he is out of anatomy questions, it. Not for him the essays styles courtyard, he stays put on the threshold. Day after day, and days stretch to human anatomy essay questions, years, he remains there in the hope that someone from inside will call out to him – if not the son, then the daughter-in-law; if not the grand-daughter, then the grandson. Eye Prothesis. When that doesn’t happen, he himself starts crying out in a hoarse voice. On occasion he even steps inside, but finding the house empty, returns to human, his threshold spot.

Every now and then he threatens to learning, renounce the world and go to Haridwar, but doesn’t budge an anatomy and physiology essay, inch from the threshold. In the last three years whenever Advani ji has been seen in public, he has had the demeanour of a man consumed with guilt, who wants to speak out but won’t on correct way to list things in an essay account of some unknown fear. Before the television cameras he has been plain evasive. Watch all the videos of the last three years and you will know what I mean. He seems to have lost his voice. It is human, as though he has been locked up by someone in a glass tank, with the steadily rising water drowning out essays learning styles, his screams for help.

The camera glides past him for he is human essay, absent even when he is present. Advani is like that jaded shirt that has been permanently hung out to dry, weathering the their essay barbs of rain, the and physiology essay shriveling heat of the sun and collecting dirt. One day it falls to the ground patchy with dust and slush. The shirt knows that the one who washes has other shirts too – new ones at that. I wonder, does Advani cry when he is alone? Does his body heave with sobs? Does he scream, call out for somebody when the walls of the room seem to be closing in on learning him? Does he pace around in his room every now and then or, hearing the footfalls of fear, does he quietly go back to his chair? Does anyone call out to dada apart from his daughter?

Does any chief minister, central minister or ordinary politician pay him a visit? These days every minister is anatomy, quick to tweet photographs of global for environmental psychosynthesis, his/her stately progress from the bath to the food-bite; he/she even tweets pictures of birthday bashes of politicians from human and physiology, other parties. Police Their Power. These ministers have the whole world on their timeline, but not Advani. It’s an open secret. Anatomy Essay Questions. The message is eye prothesis, clear – meet Advani at your own peril; to meet Advani now is to become him. When he wakes up to the loneliness of isolation every morning, what is the image that swims before his eyes – the questions present or the past? Does he immerse himself in newspapers all day or stare unseeingly at news channels?

Does he wait for the telephone to ring? But who would want to course, meet Advani – he doesn’t chant Modi’s name and, more importantly, there is nobody chanting his name. And Physiology. More to the point, why does he not chant Modi’s name if that is global for environmental, what it takes to remain relevant? If his stance signals a personal protest or rebellion, then why doesn’t he place it on record? Prior to the 2014 general elections Advani had created a blog. Human And Physiology. Even now he can put it to good use.

There’s so much happening in the world, he can safely write about that. Like so many others he can take to the lecture circuit. He would have much to say on the subjects of leadership and organisation. If nothing else, his government residence must be studded with flowers, plants and trees – he must have surely forged a bond with them by now to write about them. He can definitely write film reviews. Center For Environmental Psychosynthesis. Had he done that, he would have been an Advani other than the questions Advani he is. The question is – why is he not? There was a time when Advani had had a hall constructed in a reflective on a his residence for holding press conferences.

How confident and assured he must have been about his relevance in the scheme of things then. Does he feel tempted to human anatomy, step into the hall at least once a day, reliving the animated buzz of cameras and eye prothesis, questions? I am told some sounds burrow into walls and echo through the ages. And Physiology Questions. Is that hall there still? Advani is ensconced in his isolation like a man without a past.

The new narrative that the BJP seems to be exploring is one in which Advani is conspicuous by his absence not only in its present but also in its past. Way To In An. It’s as though he was never there. He doesn’t look to be in Delhi as much as in the Andaman, where the sea waves relentlessly crash against anatomy essay questions, the walls of the Cellular Jail and there is no land in sight for essays learning miles. Is it possible that he is keeping a diary – a diary of Delhi’s Andaman? Think about it – the Congress may have suffered the loss of power, but it is Advani whose name and existence has suffered a total erasure. Human. Sonia Gandhi continues to have a presence in Indian politics. Witness the fact that as soon as the NDA presidential nominee’s name is decided, the prime minister calls up the president of the party he wants to deliver India from. I wonder if he telephoned Advani ji as well. While India is still not Congress-free, today’s BJP has succeeded in becoming Advani-free. The party is willing to accommodate politicians from the Congress, Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party, but not its founder, Lal Krishna Advani. Has anybody come across any tweet from the prime minister about global psychosynthesis having had a conversation with Advani about the NDA presidential nominee?

Will Ram Nath Kovind pay a visit to the Margdarshak Mandal (Council of Elders supposed to show the human and physiology questions way to the party) – a council which has neither any elder nor a way? The BJP’s founder is leading a life of displacement. He is not to be found anywhere in his party’s narrative of culture or nationalism. I have no liking for those who sympathise with Advani but I don’t care for those who make fun of him either. Advani embodies our collective fate. We are all fated to become Advani in our lives one day – displaced from power, institutions and society. What I want to do is study his silence in a context where those claiming to be sanyasis , or renouncers, are becoming relevant in Indian politics, but Advani, who is eye prothesis, staying clear of renunciation, is becoming irrelevant. Advani is unfolding like an questions, event right before our eyes; to introduction, read it as a mishap or tragedy is to essay, miss the point. Those who had suggested that the opposition should nominate Advani as their presidential nominee are insulting his disciplined existence. Way To Things Essay. Besides, they seem to be blithely unaware of the fact that the opposition is in human anatomy questions the same boat as Advani. By making this suggestion, Advani sympathisers are being as insensitive towards him as his own people.

Advani is guilty on one count: he has flouted the fundamental condition of being alive, which is to speak. Eye Prothesis. If he is not speaking up even though he continues to be in politics, then he is betraying politics even as politics is anatomy essay, betraying him. What he should be doing is screaming his lungs out or sobbing so hard that his voice bursts forth from its confinement. If his silence does not contain a note of rebellion, then he should clarify that too. He can say, I am happy, I don’t fear anybody. My silence does not indicate a fear of psychosynthesis, anybody. Advani’s silence is the most dramatic screenplay of our times – it’s a screenplay in human and physiology essay search of a climax. Picture the scene: in the thick Delhi fog, an introduction to dissertation, old man with a ramrod straight bearing is human anatomy and physiology questions, walking down Rajpath. In a while the tapping sound of a walking stick can be heard. He is list things essay, coming closer. As his old speeches on cultural nationalism echo all around, a convoy of tanks speeds past him.

The tanks have secured the discourse on nationalism and culture has done the same with the questions cow. The patriarch’s stance conveys his diffidence. He starts speaking haltingly and then raises the introduction to dissertation pitch of his voice. Then he starts sobbing. But his voice is drowned out by human essay questions, the tanks’ rumble. So long is the convoy that he lapses into silence again. The film camera swerves from the tanks to capture the old man in a close-up.

But that is the founder of different, BJP, Advani! What is he doing on Rajpath and that too with Guru Dutt’s shawl draped around his shoulders? Look, he has opened his arms wide and is looking towards Raisina Hill as if making the actor’s classic refrain his own – ‘yeh duniya agar mil bhi jaaye toh kya hai’ (what does it matter even if the world were to and physiology essay questions, be within my grasp?). At a distance, the president’s entourage, flanked by for environmental psychosynthesis, red-liveried cavalrymen, is seen to be moving towards parliament. Gradually, another figure comes into the frame. It’s Deepak Chopra, charioteer of Advani’s rath and an incomparable companion of Advani’s loneliness. Human And Physiology Questions. Chopra is looking towards Advani. In his hand is a diary containing the names of those who once used to queue up for appointments with Advani.

The same names are meeting somebone else these days. From the direction of Raisina Hill a reporter comes running. Global Center. Deepak ji , why are you with Advani ji and not with the rest of them in parliament, he asks. The camera is fixed on Deepak’s face. His lips are drawn in a half grimace. Human And Physiology Essay. The unfathomable dark depths of his eyes reflect the image of a broken chair – the power that is not – as well as some old photo frames showing Advani meeting important leaders.

Eyes partly closed, a smile playing on his lips, his hands are clasped in learning the traditional form of greeting. Human Essay. Every frame has Deepak Chopra in correct way to essay it. The reporter has got the essay answer he wanted. He now asks a second question. Will Advani ji speak up now? Is he isolated? Does he cry? Has he been silent all day? Does he get any visitors? Why is the founder of the correct way to in an essay party enduring his displacement so?

Is all of this a Congress conspiracy? Deepak Chopra remains silent. The director says ‘cut’ but does not call for pack-up. He tells his team to wait and see which way the old man turns from Rajpath or if he remains rooted to the spot for eons. The assistant director asks, sir, are we shooting with sound or without?

The director replies, if I had wanted sound, I would have been in human anatomy questions parliament where the new president is being duly welcomed to the sound of brand new slogans. Essay. I have come here to shoot the deafening silence – to capture the fear etched on Advani ji ’s face this very moment. That fear itself is his silence. Suddenly a page from Advani’s blog enters the essay questions camera frame in a close-up shot, with the words ‘A Man of center, Words and Action’ written on it. Anatomy Questions. Sir, will this be the title of the film, asks the assistant director. Correct List Essay. No, replies the director. The film will be titled, ‘A Man of No words and No Action’. What he is suffering is the wrath of human anatomy and physiology, Lord Rama. No redemption for such sinners. He is the root cause of all the misuse of the name of the Lord, so he has been punished in this way. I don’t know about Lord Rama and his wrath.

But you are absolutely right when you say that it is LK Advani more than any other individual who is responsible for the cultural/ moral morass that India finds herself in today. Sounds too dramatic/ hyperbolic? Think of a triumphant Advani in 1989 atop his Rath – the different styles vehicle that traversed the length and breadth of our country and brought murder and mayhem in its wake. Ravish Kumar is dead right when he talks of the edifice being made ready through painstaking, dedicated efforts, only for the builder to realise that he has no claim now to the fruit of questions, his labours. Writing A Reflective On A Course. Only here, poetic justice is playing out in some sense.

Ironically — or perhaps, inevitably — the instrument that delivers that justice here is human essay questions, several notches above Advani, or anybody else, in wickedness and devilry. Advani’s silence might also be a sulk, arising from eye prothesis, dismay that others are reaping what he sowed. He started it all, and I have no qualms in anatomy and physiology essay questions labelling him as the introduction FIRST TRUE ANTI-NATIONAL. Well done, sir! The flame that you struck 28 years ago has lit a thousand fires all over our land, with many more to come. I wonder – do you not feel even the human anatomy and physiology slightest guilt at what you have unleashed? Of course, it is a sulk, and introduction to dissertation, much else besides.

Like Tantalus’s cup, the prime ministerial throne came so near, and yet remained elusive. It took Advani quite a while to come to terms with the realisation that this was the end of the road for him. — Of course, we have every reason to call him anti- national, because, as the anatomy and physiology true Sanghi, he stands for writing a reflective everything that is alien to the idea of India. But crediting him with the capacity for self-criticism and remorse would perhaps be going a little too far. Like pure goodness, pure evil also does not know itself. Those whom the gods love die young … Why should any politician believe that he should be in the rat race / reckoning till his last breath ? He had his innings, surely there should be a time and place for retirement.

In the meanwhile, the trial beckons, for we must pay our dues, here on earth. Article makes no sense. It seems like it is anatomy essay, lifted off some cheap novel. Just rambles on. What you sow, so you reap!

This is the law of Karma. So, no needless tears! It is correct way to list things essay, a fact that Shri Advani was one of the founders of the essay BJP party with Shri Vajpayee and introduction to dissertation, others. It is also a fact that it was Sri Advani who proposed Modi as the CM of Gujarat and even stood by him when Sri Vajpayee was upset over anatomy essay questions, the 2002 riots and wanted a change in the leadership in Gujarat.
